According to today’s Journal Sentinel, John Stocco has been invited to rookie orientation at Green Bay. The former Badgers quarterback went undrafted over the weekend and hasn’t been signed by anyone yet, but the Packers are at least giving him an opportunity to try out.
One would think there would be a natural, symbiotic relationship between the Wisconsin football program and Green Bay, but it seems exceedingly rare that anyone goes from being a Badger to being a Packer. Offensive lineman Mark Tauscher is the only UW player on the roster right now, and he was a seventh-round draft pick in 2000.
Stocco has a long road ahead before he makes this or any roster, though. The rookie orientation camp is a three-day tryout, after which the Packers will decide who to extend free-agent contracts to. Even then he’ll be far down the list behind the other QBs already on the roster, but it’s at least a shot.
Good luck to you, John Stocco.
