Not a whole lot of news coming out of Green Bay today since coach Mike McCarthy decided to give the team the day off. (Day off from practice? I don’t think coach Lombardi would have approved.) But that doesn’t mean we can’t talk a little bit about the Packers.
So far training camp has been a bit of a mixed bag. Some players have managed to stand out — A. J. Hawk, James Jones, and oddly enough Aaron Rodgers — and some have struggled so far, namely first-round pick Justin Harrell and second-round rookie Brandon Jackson. The offense really struggled last night in practice at old City Stadium during two minute drills: They committed several false-start penalties and failed to score a point. But we’re a long way away from the start of the regular season and no one can really judge the team until we see them in game situations.
And that might be the Packers best weapon. No one outside Packer Nation is giving Green Bay much chance for success this year, so other teams are going to overlook the Packers and then “bam!” they strike. Before anyone has noticed the Green and Gold are in the playoffs.
But this will only work if we all keep this under our hats. So if you happen to be the editor of the Pro Football Prospectus and you happen to be on ESPN’s “Cold Pizza” “First Take,” just try and keep the Packers chances on the down low.

Did he say Super Bowl? Doh!
