Sorry to say the start of the Winter Games has not been very successful for out Badger state Olympians so far. Speed skaters Casey FitzRandolph and Kip Carpenter both stumbled during their runs in the 500 meter event yesterday. FitzRandolph, the US defending gold medalist, finished in 12th place after two runs and Carpenter ended with a disappointing 26th place finish. Tucker Fredricks also finished in 25th place in his first ever Olympics event. Joey Cheek brought home the gold for the US, though, with a time of 69.76 seconds in his two runs. FitzRandolph will have another chance at a medal on Saturday when he competes in the 1,000 meter race.
Over in women’s curling, Maureen Brunt and her team mates are having a tough go of it. They lost to Norway 11-6 yesterday and fell to Team Canada this morning 11-5. The US girls go up against Japan this afternoon needing a win badly.
