Pretty good performance by Brett Favre on Letterman last night. He told a funny story about going bow hunting before a Bears game, he got a chance to reiterate that he is retired and no it had nothing to do with Randy Moss, and he had a little fun with everyone when Dave tried to suggest #4 might make a comeback. I’m sure that Favre is right when he said “Something’s bound to happen” around the time training camp opens, but I think that “something” probably has more to do with whatever hunting season will be opening around then.
The other “something” that will happen this Fall is that Favre’s picture will be plastered on the cover of millions of Madden NFL 2009 boxes. Letterman showed off the game cover, which I’m still not sure was maybe the whole reason for Favre being booked on the show. Electronic Arts the past few years has used the late night talk shows to do advance press for the new edition of the game, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case. Pretty amazing though that EA would put a retired player on the cover of the game. Normally they try to sign whatever hot shot, big deal guy for the cover, someone like Shaun Alexander after his MVP year or Vince Young after his ROY season. I mean Favre won’t even be in the game, unless of course you unlock the 1996 championship team.
I am a little worried about The Madden Curse, though. Just because Favre is retired doesn’t mean The Curse can’t touch him. Brett could suffer a terrible injury while mowing the lawn, or he could fall out of a tree stand during deer season, who knows what might happen. I hope he thought long and hard about his family and their well being before agreeing to be on the cover.
On the other hand, maybe nothing at all will happen — if anyone can break The Curse it would be Brett Favre, don’t you know. Then I could see the league and the players union, in order to protect the active stars in the NFL, forcing EA to keep Favre on the cover for the rest of time. And wouldn’t that be pretty great?
