Peter King Mails It In » Brats & Beer

In his quest to see each and every Starbucks location in this country, Peter King is once again traveling the highways and byways to visit all the NFL teams’ training camps this Fall, filing his reports to SI.com under the title “Postcards from Camp.” Yesterday he was in Green Bay, so what does the King of coffee nerds have to say about our Packers?

Oddly enough, a significant portion of his Packers camp postcard is devoted to food. Kudos to the genius in the front office who orchestrated the huge feast they laid out for PK’s visit to Green Bay: There’s no better way to distract the man than to set him loose at a banquet table. As for the actual football analysis, PK did have a few thoughts on the Packers.

He thinks Brett Favre is nimble. Huh? The man is a living legend and stands poised to break several important NFL career records this year, and the best you can come up with is nimble? I know you’re probably trying to save most of your Favre man-love for the television but you could have let a little slip out here.

PK thinks that the running back position is a big weakness for the Packers. Damn, that’s some insight. I guess that’s why they pay you the big bucks. He also thinks Green Bay may have selected Marshawn Lynch had he slipped that far in the draft. PK has all the angles, folks; nothing gets past him.

Okay, enough of the obvious filler, we want some of that vision and deep understanding that only a veteran sports writer such as yourself can offer. Hit us with your best shot, Peter:

I think James Jones, the third-round wideout from Fresno State, is miles ahead of the other drafted receiver, David Clowney of Virginia Tech. Jones has terrific hands, and you can’t overthrow him.

Really going out on a limb there, aren’t you Peter? Next you might be telling us that Brett Favre is a better quarterback than rookie free agent Paul Thompson.

PK does earn his frequent flier miles with a fairly decent critique of Charles Woodson and Al Harris, saying that the Packers acquisition of Woodson last year was “an excellent signing,” and about Harris PK writes “He loves football and plays it with verve and aggression.” Finally some news we can use, but it’s a little too little and a little too late to save this “Postcard from Camp” from going into the dead letter bin.
