In this weekend’s opener between the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos, former Badger standout Jim Leonhard proved what a gamer he is. The safety recorded eight solo tackles and five assists, returned an interception for 36 yards and knocked down another pass. Leonhard was a big fan favorite when he played for Wisconsin and it’s great to see him doing well in the pro ranks. It’s too bad his day was marred by the injury to Kevin Everett and the loss to the Broncos.

Lee Evans, another former Badger, had a couple catches in that Bills game, and Jason Jefferson recorded a tackle.

There were several Wisconsin players involved in the game between Houston and Kansas City. Running back Michael Bennett had five carries for 24 yards and caught two passes for 10 yards for the Chiefs, while Ron Dayne, now with the Texans, had 13 carries for 33 yards. Dayne’s teammate Jamar Fletcher recorded seven tackles and forced the fumble that Mario Williams returned for a touchdown. Tight end Owen Daniels also had one catch for 14 yards.

Wide receiver Chris Chambers had six catches for 92 yards in the Dolphins game against Washington, while in the Lions tilt against Oakland running back Brian Calhoun had one catch for five yards. Alex Lewis also recorded two tackles.

First round draft pick Joe Thomas, though, had to have endured the worst day of opening weekend. I’m sure he did all he could to help the Browns, but quarterbacks Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson were sacked six times as Cleveland got whooped up on by the Steelers. For his sake, I hope they get things turned around there.
