Well what a long wait just to get to the #30 pick and then Ted Thompson trades down — big surprise! — into the second round, but at long last we have our first name: WR Jordy Nelson from Kansas State. Who? Just keep repeating the mantra, “Best player on the board.”

Actually, Nelson looks like he might be an exciting pick. According to SI.com, Nelson started out as a defensive back before being moved to WR as a sophomore. Here’s their draft analysis:

Intelligent, dependable pass-catcher coming off a breakout season. Displays outstanding awareness, always on the same page as his quarterback, and works hard to be productive. Displays adequate sharpness running routes, plays with excellent body control, and nicely extends to make the reception away from his frame. Comes across the middle of the field to find the soft spot, easily makes the reception in stride, and uses his frame to shield away opponents. Effective running after the reception and works hard as a blocker.

Nelson’s stats from last year: 122 receptions for 1,606 yards with 11 TDs. Also, he has some a punt return skills, which is a position the Packer special teams needs some help in. (Has for some time, no?) So we get a little extra competition in the WR corps and maybe some of this:

More video: This one, Nelson burns corner Aqib Talib, who wen to the Buccaneers with the #20 pick. Let’s hope he can do something like this when the Packers travel to Tampa this season.
