i can has pass protection?
I’ve taken two showers already this morning and I still can’t seem to get the stink off from last night. And it has only gotten worse after reading reports on the game from Bob McGinn and Jason Wilde and having watched some of the “highlights” posted at NFL.com. So how did the Packers go from looking like a promising young team on Monday night to not having a clue six days later? More importantly, how does Mike McCarthy get his squad back on track for Denver and the regular season to follow?
Last night on the radio, a lot of the focus was on the offensive line and the need to solidify positions there. MM said after the game that he didn’t have his team prepared. Greg Bedard posts at the JS Packers Blog that distractions, injuries, and a light camp schedule are all to blame. Whatever the cause, it doesn’t seem like it is entirely related to the talent on the field (except in the case of Jarrett Bush — that guy has to go). If the problem is in the preparation, fundamentals, or something else along those lines, then it is correctable. The question is can it get corrected in the limited amount of time available before the season opener on Sept. 8?
Another issue that is quickly coming to a head is the question of a backup quarterback. Maybe last night wasn’t the fairest test for Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, but neither seemed to show much in the way of developing towards being a reliable #2 on the depth chart. They’ll get one more test Friday in Denver, but then the first roster cuts are due on the 26th. I expect there will be a lot of activity going on at 1265 Lombardi that afternoon.
