Free Agent Lunacy » Brats & Beer

The past few weeks of relative calm around the NFL is about to be shattered by the start of the free agent signing period on Thursday. Let the bidding wars begin. It won’t mean much hoopla around Packer Nation, though, not with Ted Thompson at the helm; TT will be content to sit back and watch as billionaire owners like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones wave their checkbooks like magic wands trying to conjure up a championship team.
Or will he?
Tonight we’ll be treated to a full lunar eclipse, so perhaps cosmic forces will come into play this year. With the moon playing tricks on his mind, maybe TT will go looney and start chasing some high-priced free agents with all that salary cap money he’s been sitting on. Like a lunatic he might enter the fray to bid on such players as Lance Briggs, Asante Samuel, or Alan Faneca, or the lunacy could move TT to re-sign Corey Williams. The power of the moon is strong, so anything is possible.
Then again, maybe I’m just being a loon.
Green Bay does have a number of players becoming free agents tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see which of them get new contracts from TT. My guess would be that Rob Davis and Tracy White both get new deals, along with restricted free agents Colin Cole and Vernand Morency. Ryan Grant and Atari Bigby, among the exclusive-rights free agents, will also be re-signed. No amount of lunar-inspired madness, though, will keep Williams in a Packer uniform, unless it strikes his agent and he agrees to play for peanuts.
And just in case you are interested, the lunar eclipse starts around 7:45pm CST, with the climax beginning about 9pm and lasting for nearly an hour. This will be the last full eclipse visible in North America until 2010, so weather permitting you should get out and see it.
