It was another solid win for UW football, now 2-0 in this young 2006 season. Despite some mistakes, the Badgers rolled to an easy 34-10 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks. John Stocco threw for 227 yards and one touchdown, while PJ Hill continued to power the running game with 101 yards and three scores on the ground. The defense held the Leathernecks to 246 yards and came up with three turnovers in the home opener.

That’s not to say the Badgers don’t still have some work to do before plunging deep into the Big 10 schedule. Jarvis Minton gave up the ball on the opening kickoff, leading to Western Illinois first score, a 42-yard field goal. Stocco fumbled a snap and the offense was flagged for a false start penalty on a first and goal play from the five-yard line. Western Illinois also did a number on the second team offense, which came in at the end of the game to produce -28 yards on nine plays, including three penalties.

Still, a win is a win and if you’re going to have miscues it’s better they come against a Division I-AA team early in the season instead of against Penn State or Iowa in November. Coach Bielema still has one more game next week against San Diego State to get things clicking before the Badgers travel to Ann Arbor for the conference opener against Michigan.
