All My Ex’s Live In Denver (Except For One In Phoenix) » Brats & Beer

There’s a lot of familiar names circulating in the news today as the coaching carousel goes round and round. Unfortunately, Kurt Schottenheimer is not among those being bandied about for open positions; I’m secretly hoping he’ll get offered a chance to coach in the NFL Europe, far, far from Green Bay’s secondary.

First was the news that the Denver Broncos hired Jim Bates to be their assistant coach/defense, replacing Larry Coyer. You remember Jim Bates, right? Of course you do, because all us Packer fans have been quietly carrying the torch that somehow, through some kind of magic the Packers former defensive coordinator might return. Well, I guess it wasn’t likely to happen before, and now it’s just not gonna happen.

Oh well, if we can’t have the mentor, we still have the student, right?

As if that wasn’t enough, though, the Broncos also announced they promoted Bob Slowik, another former Green Bay defensive coordinator, from defensive backs coach to coordinate the defense. So Denver will be going into the 2007 season with Green Bay’s 2004 and 2005 defensive leaders; should be a fun reunion when the Packers play the Broncos this year.

The last former Green Bay name making news today is good ‘ol Mike Sherman. Apparently the Cardinals have asked him to come back for a second interview, and everyone seems to think they’ll announce something soon. I’m not so sure that Uncle Mikey can make something out of that team when Dennis Green couldn’t, but then Green only had Matt Leinart for part of his last season. At least it’ll make those Phoenix vs. Seattle games next year somewhat interesting.
