Would Ben Utecht Look Good In Green & Gold? » Brats & Beer

It’s crazy time in the NFL again. With free agency in full swing there are crazy deals being made for players and crazier rumors being circulated among fans.

Packer Nation is hardly immune, with some of chatter out there saying Green Bay should make a trade for Jason Taylor. Yes, an 11-year veteran defensive end is exactly component the Packers have been missing. And maybe to make room on the depth chart, they could turn KGB into a linebacker to compete against Brady Poppinga.

One idea that doesn’t sound too crazy is that Ted Thompson should make a deal for tight end Ben Utecht. He’s had a couple decent seasons with the Colts, started 13 games last year and caught 31 passes for 364 yards. He’s a restricted free agent, but since he was undrafted the Packers wouldn’t have to give up a pick to sign him.

With Bubba Franks gone and only Donald Lee holding down the fort, the Packers will need to either draft a tight end or find one off the street if they don’t sign a free agent now. Some have mentioned Alge Crumpler as a possible candidate but I’m thinking that contract might end up being a little too rich for TT’s blood. Utecht, though, could be a relatively inexpensive way to fill that hole with a veteran player.
