Oh sweet Jebus, no!
Remember how happy we all were Monday night when the Packers looked halfway decent in their pre-season debut? Well, this is how it feels when they look nowhere even close to decent. Green Bay didn’t just get beat by San Francisco, they were crushed, blown up, and embarrassed in a 34-6 loss. About the only things that went right for the Green & Gold were Jordy Nelson on kick returns and Jon Ryan didn’t shank any punts. Thank goodness Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal, maybe no one will notice this game was even played.
On the offensive side, a lot of the problems can be pinned on the play of the linemen. Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times in the span of two quarters (one of those was probably his fault for hanging onto the ball too long) and Brandon Jackson produced a total of 10 yards on three touches. Jason Spitz, Scott Wells, and Josh Sitton all got beat at one time or another and judging from the sound of it on the radio the 49ers defense basically had its way up front. It also didn’t help matters that Donald Lee dropped a touchdown pass.
The first team defense maybe put in a more disappointing performance just because that unit seemed more together after Monday’s game. Unfortunately they got gashed on the ground and couldn’t get any consistent pressure on J.T. O’Sullivan. Granted there were a lot of people sitting out, but San Francisco dominated in the second quarter in a way that they had no business doing. Oh, and then there was Jarett Bush, who got beat like … like … well, like something that gets beat badly and repeatedly.
I could keep going on — penalties, blown assignments, turnovers and miscues — but it would just depress me even more. At least they’ve gotten this sort of performance out of their system now in the pre-season when it doesn’t count. We’ll see this week how well the locker room responds to adversity.
