I gotta hand it to old T. Thompson, he’s a crafty one. By now I’m sure you’ve heard the news that the Packers have set up an interview with Wade Phillips, and I’m sure you said to yourself, “Bum Phillips? I thought he retired.” But then someone else probably came along and said, “No, not Bum Phillips, his son, Wade Phillips,” and you said, “Wade Phillips? Who the heck wants to hire Wade Phillips? Has he held a head coaching job for more than two or three years?” So then you pull up the San Diego Chargers Web site, and sure enough, Wade coached Denver for two years, spent three years with Buffalo, and coached the last three games of the season at Atlanta after Dan Reeves was fired. So then your thinking to yourself, “Holy crap, has Ted Thompson lost his mind?”
But hold on there, lil’ pardner. You’re just not seeing the whole Thompson plan. This is all part of a diversionary front. He brings in Wade for the interview and suddenly everyone’s going to start thinking there’s something going on. Soon, some other teams will call Wade in for interviews and suddenly he’s the hot property on the market. Then Ted, that sly old fox, can have his pick of Brad Childress, Ken Whisenhunt, or Tim Lewis. Yeah, I knew old T-Bird was the right man for the job.
