Saturday’s Football Dilemma » Brats & Beer

The weekend is upon us once again and this is a big Satuday for college football. USC travels to Nebraska (a no win situation as far as I’m concerned), Michigan plays Notre Dame (someone’s gotta win, right?) and the Badgers play against The Citadel (Wisconsin wins easily, but fans lose because the game is on the Big Ten Network).

However, I face a bit of a moral dilemma this weekend. My alma mater Iowa State takes on the Iowa Schmuckeyes in their ongoing intrastate rivalry, which should be the highpoint of the season for me as a Cyclones fan, but even though the game is being shown on VERSUS I’m not sure that I should even watch it. The Clones are 0-2 thus far in the Gene Chizik era, having been beaten by Kent State and Northern Iowa, and look unlikely to be competitive — let alone win — against Iowa.

The diehard Clones fan in me says that a miracle might happen, like in 1998 when Iowa State upended the Squawkeyes 27-9, the first of five straight wins over the Evil Empire. It could be just like that. But the realist in me says the Cyclones are going to get crushed Saturday night, that it might be even worse than the 57-3 drubbing we took in 1985 under Jim Criner. Yeah, no one needs to witness a thrashing like that twice in one lifetime.

According to a piece in the Des Moines Register (from Peterclone at the Cyclone Sports Journal) the Iowa-Iowa State series might be coming to an end in the near future if the schools can’t agree on contract terms. Given the present situation, I can’t say that would necessarily be a bad thing.
