So, for all the talk about new directions and new faces and new blood, Mike McCarthy has decided to promote defensive line coach Bob Sanders to be the Packers new defensive coordinator. Sanders has worked under the recently departed Jim Bates for the past five years, including four seasons in Miami as linebackers coach and this past season in Green Bay. Continuity is McCarthy’s mantra when it comes to the defense: don’t rock the boat, don’t make any sudden moves.

I was really hoping that McCarthy was going to hire someone experienced in running a defense to take charge of that unit and make it his own. Like I said in an earlier post, the thing that worries me with Sanders is having another coach getting his feet wet for the first time. Both he and Jagodzinski will be learning their craft on the job along with McCarthy, meaning that only special teams coach John Stock is going to know what he’s supposed to be doing this first season.
