Reggie White’s induction into the Hall of Fame yesterday was a fitting tribute to both a great player and a special man. Both his widow Sara and son Jeremy saluted White as a legendary player, with stories about his playing days and his teammates and coaches, but both also sought to pay respect to his memory as a father and as a spiritual man who cared about those around him. Sara’s speech also inspired the crowd in Canton with the message that what was important about Reggie was how he lived his life to the fullest. “I encourage you to live like Reggie lived,” she told the audience. It was particularly touching when they both broke down after unveiling Reggie’s bust: Clearly his untimely passing almost two years ago has left a deep void in their lives.

It’s too bad that the Packers had their Family Night scrimmage scheduled for last night or there would have been a bigger Green & Gold presence at the ceremony. Several current and former players did go to Canton in the morning and had a private brunch with the White family. In the end, though, it’s not about Packer Green or Eagles Green, the day was a great celebration of a man’s life on and off the football field.
