Yesterday the Packers announced the hiring of Carl “Big Daddy” Hairston to the defensive coaching staff, though his actual title and duties have yet to be determined. Hairston is a veteran line coach with 11-years experience so he’ll most likely help out Robert Nunn, who was promoted to defensive line coach on Monday. “Big Daddy” coached in Kansas City the past five seasons and before that was with St. Louis during their first Super Bowl run in 1999. As a player, he was starting defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles in the years before Reggie White from 1976 to 1983 and played in Super Bowl XV. This all looks good on paper, but I’m wondering why they didn’t just hire Hairston to be the defensive line coach. We’ll have to see what his actual position is.
The Press-Gazette is also reporting today that Tom Clements will get the nod to become Green Bay’s new quarterbacks coach after weeks of rumors and tall tales. Clements was offensive coordinator the past two seasons with Buffalo, during which time he helped break in J.P. Losman as a starter. Before working for the Bills, Clements was QB coach at New Orleans, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh. I’m obviously relieved that earlier rumors about Alex Van Pelt turned out not to be true, because that would have just been too wierd and probably disastrous, but a resume that includes Losman also doesn’t fill me with confidence. I guess it is valuable experience working with a young player, though, and we’ll need an experienced guy to get Aaron Rodgers ready for his eventual debut.
