Packers head coach Mike McCarthy introduced six new and returning coaches today to run the offense during his inaugural campaign in Green Bay. Among the coaches retained from Mike Sherman’s staff are Edgar Bennett, James Campen, and Joe Philbin, while Ty Knott, Ben McAdoo, and Jimmy Robinson made their first appearance in the Green & Gold camp. Bennett, a former Packers running back and director of player development, will retain his position as running backs coach, while Philbin was promoted to offensive line coach from tight ends/assistant offensive line coach. Campen retains his spot as assistant offensive line coach.
Knott, who was on Jim Haslett’s defensive staff in New Orleans the past three seasons, was put in charge of offensive quality control for the Packers. His resume also includes time with Jacksonville, Detroit, and Washington. McAddo follows McCarthy from San Francisco and New Orleans and was named tight ends coach. Robinson, named as the new wide receivers coach, also comes to the Packers from New Orleans following stints with the Giants, Colts, and Falcons.
There was no word today on a new quarterbacks coach, though rumors still swirl around Alex Van Pelt. The former Buffalo Bills signal caller was hired two weeks ago as QB coach at the University of Buffalo by former Packers player development director Turner Gill, but The Buffalo News reported yesterday that Van Pelt was still being considered for the job in Green Bay.
