Peter King is fulfilling his destiny at last. After years of fawning over Brett Favre and cultivating his close relationship with the future Hall of Fame quarterback, King is right where he should be reporting from inside the Favre compound during the (hopefully) final few days of this sports soap opera. His dispatch today from Mississippi was brief and to the point — letting the world know Favre will not immediately report to camp — but I fully expect tomorrow’s MMQ column on SI.com to be pages long on what is happening inside the Favre encampment.

I hope so, because through this whole mess I’ve been wondering what is going on down there on his estate. In my mind I imagine it looking like a scene out of The Godfather when they “go to the mattresses” and hole up at the Corleone house. There are probably goons gaurding the entrance and Bonita is in the kitchen brewing up pots of gumbo for the troops. Meanwhile, I can see Favre pacing his inner sanctum like a caged animal, ranting about Ted Thompson and how everyone is out to get him.

You can expect this to be turned into a book sometime next year or whenever Favre does actually retire for good. HBO will probably turn it into a miniseries. I can’t wait.
