Jones Head Of The Class? » Brats & Beer

If the early reports from the newspapers are to be believed, it appears that Packers wide receiver James Jones is surpassing both first-round pick Justin Harrell and running back Brandon Jackson to be at the head of the 2007 rookie class.

Going into training camp I think we all thought that the third-round pick out of San Jose State was going to be a project, but both the Press-Gazette and the Journal Sentinel made room to spotlight Jones today after last night’s practice at old City Stadium. Green Bay’s most trusted source reports “Jones caught three passes from quarterback Brett Favre, who seemed to quickly develop trust in the rookie,” while the Milwaukee paper says, “Jones has exhibited exemplary skills and a professional approach.”

It would be very good news for the offense if Jones can keep up his level of development going through camp and the pre-season and beat Robert Ferguson to become the #3 wide receiver. The one thing Packer Nation has complained about the past couple seasons is that Brett Favre doesn’t have enough weapons to call on, and everyone was wondering where the points were going to come from this year. Hopefully Jones can provide that spark.
