Have The Polls Closed For McCarney? » Brats & Beer

Thank goodness the election is finally over. I know that our representative democracy is one of the things that makes this country great and special in the world, but I could really do without the barrage of inane political commercials. And don’t even get me started on the coverage of the elections by the news media. I’m just glad it is all over for another two years.

One guy still stumping for his job, though, is ISU head football coach Dan McCarney, whose squad is a woeful 3-7 so far without a single conference victory. He met with AD Jamie Pollard yesterday to talk about the season and I suspect his continued tenure and plans to meet with him again today, according to the Des Moines Register. We might have news as early as this week as to whether coach Mac will be staying or not.

In his 12 years at Iowa State, McCarney has amassed a record of 55-84 overall, 26-67 in the Big 12. To his credit, though, the previous couple seasons the Cyclones have come within a game of winning the Big 12 North and McCarney does have five bowl game appearances to his credit. Considering that before he arrived the Clones hadn’t been invited to a bowl game since 1978, the coach Mac era has been the most successful yet for ISU football.

But I don’t think that will be good enough for Pollard, who has big plans for a $135 million facilities upgrade at Iowa State. And frankly I wouldn’t complain if he decided to let coach Mac go. McCarney has done a lot for Iowa State football, and for ISU athletics in general, but it is time to find someone who can get this program over the hump and really complete for a Big 12 title.
