Hard Times for Frederick “Fuzzy” Thurston | Brats & Beer

With little for Packers fans to do these days than watch Game of Thrones, drink a few Moscow Mules, and pray there’s actually a football season next year to defend their title as Football Champions of the World, the only real news out the last few weeks is a rather sad story.

Frederick “Fuzzy” Thurston apparently owes the tax man a lot of money (to the tune of $1.7 million) and his Super Bowl II championship ring is scheduled to go on the auction block on August 4 at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, Illinois in an effort to make up some of the difference.

Apparently this isn’t a voluntary sale, with authorities seizing the ring (and they’re looking for his Super Bowl I ring as well, which hasn’t turned up yet) as well as other memorabilia that will be sold such as rings from multiple NFL Championships in the pre-Super-Bowl era and signed footballs from multiple Packer greats, including Vince Lombardi.

Thurston played for the Packers from 1959-1967.
