DeNure Continues Her Quest For Nome » Brats & Beer

In the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race, now nearing a week since the official start, Zoya DeNure is listed in 55th place this morning. She left the checkpoint at Ruby this morning at five o’clock, though it looks like two of her dogs had to stay behind, so now she’s down to a team of 12.

From Ruby there’s about 445 miles of trail to go before DeNure makes it to the finish line in Nome. The section of the trail she’s on runs along the Yukon River and eventually takes the mushers down to the Bering Sea coast. Four more checkpoints and about 240 miles before DeNure hits the ocean.

Anne Capistrant, meanwhile, is still in at the halfway checkpoint in Cripple, more than 100 miles behind DeNure.

Looking at the weather reports along the trail, it looks downright balmy there in central Alaska, with overcast skies and temperatures just above freezing. Even in Nome it is a full seven degrees above zero. Bust out the short sleeve shirts!
