Cyclones Survive Rebel Attack » Brats & Beer

After winning their first game ever in overtime (triple OT no less), the ISU Cyclones didn’t make things any easier on themselves last night against UNLV, though they still managed to eek out a 16-10 victory. The game came right down to the final play after the Rebels drove all the way to the Iowa State 11 yard line, but a pass into the end zone from Shane Steichen was caught just out of bounds as time ran out. I guess it’s not going to be easy to be a Cyclones fan this year, but then when has it ever been?
However, the second wave of Rebel attacks came after the game was over. Convinced that Aaron Straiten had caught the pass for a touchdown, the UNLV players and coaches stood around on the field for about 20 minutes demanding that officials review the play. They even jumped up and down on the Cyclone logo at midfield. Is that the way they coach ‘em up in Las Vegas? What a bunch of babies. I haven’t seen highlights because apparently posting video online is far too technically advanced for the TV stations in central Iowa, but as it turns out the replay official did look at the play and determined that the ruling should stand.
So congrats to coach McCarney and the Iowa State football squad; you’re now 2-0 heading into battle against the Iowa Schmuckeyes next week. I’m mightily afraid, though, that you’ll need to muster up even more good fortune to get through that contest with a win.
