Chizik Era Needs A Restart » Brats & Beer

What in the name of Johnny Majors is going on out there? Here I was all prepared to write some beautiful prose about the glorious debut of the Gene Chizik era at Iowa State and then the Cyclones had to go and lose . . . to Kent State. Now, the Golden Flashes might be good — for the MAC — but this isn’t the way the new chapter in ISU football was supposed to begin. I’d suggest forgetting this game ever happened and starting over next week against Northern Iowa.
According to the game reports, because no one in the right mind would put this game on TV — not even back in Iowa — there was plenty of blame to go around. Bret Meyer threw a couple picks and fumbled the snap once, there were penalties galore, and the defense gave up more than 200 yards on the ground. About the only thing that went right in the 14-23 loss was J.J. Bass who rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries.
At least no one was trying to whitewash the loss after the game. Coach Chizik called it “a comedy of errors” and Meyer admitted he was “terrible.” Now they have some things — okay, a lot of things — to work on this week before the Panthers come to Jack Trice next Saturday. (Note to coach Chizik: Cyclone fans will easily forget about this loss — especially if you beat Iowa — but if you lose to UNI we’ll bring it up all season long.)
Things will get better and this Iowa State team will improve, I have no doubt. So with that said, I’m going to go ahead and put everyone on notice that the Chizik era has begun. Watch out for the Cyclones!
