Badgers running back Brian Calhoun has decided to throw his hat into the the ring for the 2006 NFL Draft. The Journal Sentinel reports that a press conference is set for Thursday when he’ll formally announce, but he has apparently informed new UW head coach Bret Bielema of his decision already. The 5′ 10″, 194-pound tail back rushed for 1,423 yards in 12 regular season games and capped off his performance with a 213-yard effort against Auburn in the Capital One Bowl.
While we wish Calhoun well and will be watching his progress closely in the pros, his decision leaves the Badgers backfield almost bare. Freshman P.J. Hill was the top #2 prospect coming into the season after gaining 4,012 yards and scoring 48 touchdowns in three seasons at Brooklyn-Poly Prep, but he suffered broken leg in training camp and is as yet untested at the college rank. Dion Foster and Jerry Butler are the other freshman hopefuls to fill Calhoun’s position. Booker Stanley’s status is still uncertain following his recent run in with the law.
