Out of the field of athletes boasting a connection to the Badger State, Molly Engstrom became the first to win a medal in this year’s Winter Olympics. Engstrom, a native of Siren, WI, and a UW Badger, helped the US women’s hockey team win the bronze medal today with a 4-0 victory over Finland. Team USA was heavily favored to waltz through the tournament and meet the Canadian team in the gold medal round, but a tough game against the Finns last Tuesday showed the team to be vulnerable, and then the stunning loss to Sweden on Friday took them out of contention. Meanwhile, the Canadian women did live up to expectations and took the gold with a 4-1 win over Sweden. Carla MacLeod, a defenseman for Team Canada, also played at UW, so there’s another feather in Bucky’s cap.
