The third round of NFL pre-season games offered a big opportunity for some former Badgers to strut their stuff, including Lee Evans and Alex Lewis. Evans once again was one of the leaders for the Buffalo Bills offense with five catches for 70 yards. He also ran the ball for six yards. Evans leads the Bills with eight catches for 185 yards during the pre-season. Teammate Jim Leonhard had a punt return for 19 yards and DL Jason Jefferson had a tackle.
Lewis, currently second on the Lions depth chart at weak side linebacker, had a huge game with six tackles and one assist. He also forced a fumble and recovered the ball on a play in the fourth quarter. The rest of the Detroit team didn’t play so well, though, as the Lions fell to Oakland 21-3. Rookie running back Brian Calhoun had six carries for 14 yards and caught a pass for seven yards.
Elsewhere around the league, running back Michael Bennett saw his first action for the Chiefs, with 13 carries for 39 yards in a 16-12 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Linebacker Nick Greisen recorded his first interception of the pre-preseason for the Jaguars in a 29-18 win over Tampa, while Owen Daniels caught a pass for 12 yards in the second quarter of Houston’s 17-14 loss to Denver. Rookie wideout Brandon Williams averaged 24.5 yards on two kickoff returns and nine yards on two punt returns for the 49ers. On another punt return, though, he fumbled and recovered the ball after getting hit by Abram Elam, a rookie out of Kent State.
Veteran kicker John Hall struggled along with his Redskins teammates against the New England Patriots: his only field goal attempt, from 43 yards out, was blocked. Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi is suffering from a shoulder injury and didn’t see action this week.
Among Iowa Staters in the NFL, Sage Rosenfels put in another solid game for the Texans, completing 10 of 15 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Seneca Wallace, meanwhile, struggled against the Chargers, completing just 5 of 12 for 61 yards. Rookie linebacker Tim Dobbins got a big sack on his fellow Cyclone alumnus and also recorded three tackles.
