An Unsaintly Afternoon In Green Bay » Brats & Beer

Like a lot of Packers fans, I mostly wanted to see Green Bay improve this week from last. Well, here’s your improved Packers team: Not good enough to win but better than that abomination that got blanked by Chicago last week. Yes, the offense decided to show up today against the Saints and got into the end zone, but the defense made a too brief appearance at the beginning of the game and then must have decided to retire to Curly’s Pub for some appetizers and brewskies.

A lot went right for the Packers, no doubt. The defense came up with three interceptions and contained both Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush, Brett Favre threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns, and the offense was 50% on third down conversions. But a whole lot more didn’t go right, mostly the secondary that gave up 353 yards passing and 20 straight points through the second and third quarters. Then there was the running game that decided not to show up, the offensive line that gave up two sacks, and wide receivers and tight ends who dropped untold numbers of passes. (Here’s looking at you, Bubba Franks.)

Unfortunately, we can’t say now there’s no where for this team to go but up. The Packers are 0-2 and headed into two road games against the Lions and the Eagles where things could obviously go worse. I seriously hope not, I seriously hope Coach McCarthy finds a way to get the running game going, but I am seriously looking into heavy medication to get through the rest of the season.
