Ahmad Carroll: The Fall Guy? » Brats & Beer

Well here it is Friday and it looks like Kurt Schottenheimer still has a job in Green Bay. This disappoints me greatly, but it does not surprise me much. It would be a pretty big jolt to the franchise to lose not just a former first round draft pick but also a coach, and it would be pretty tough to fill that void during a short week before Sunday’s game.
BeerKid at Packer Palace has a pretty good rant on Ahmad Carroll getting cut loose earlier this week and opines that Mr. Hands to the Face was just a scape goat for a Packers staff that was ill prepared and mismanaged the game on Monday night. I can’t really disagree with any part of that. But just because Carroll was a convenient fall guy for a dimwitted coaching staff doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve to get cut from the squad, it’s just that it should have happened a long time before the Packers took the field in Philadelphia. If the piano bar loving corner had been released during the off-season, maybe Green Bay could have found a serviceable nickle back and everything now would be right as rain, correct? Probably not with Schottenheimer on the staff.
With the bye coming after this Sunday’s game against St. Louis, this could be one of the more action packed off weeks in Green Bay in quite awhile. The team is clearly foundering, even if they win against the Rams, and there needs to be some kind of course correction. Mike McCarthy would be well advised to use the two-week break to re-evaluate his staff and his roster and make some adjustments accordingly. And firing Schottenheimer would be an excellent first step to fixing what is wrong in the Packer secondary.
