A Busy Sunday For Packers » Brats & Beer

We might be in the middle of a long holiday weekend, but this will not be a day of rest for Ted Thompson. There are still some holes to fill in the Packers 53-man roster, signings for the practice squad, and a press conference scheduled for 2pm.
The top priority on Ted’s list is to find a new long snapper, having placed J.J. Jansen on injured reserve yesterday. Consensus opinion holds that TT will claim Thomas Gafford, who was released from Green Bay in early August, off waivers, but the Packers have invited three other players to try out.
Ted also has to be looking for another body to put on the Packers defensive line. In yesterday’s cuts, Green Bay kept only three true tackles, so either someone will be claimed off waivers or a trade will be in the offing to snag a player hidden on another team’s depth chart.
I’m waiting to see if TT makes a move to sign a veteran QB today or tomorrow. (Chris Simms anyone?) If not, the Packers might wait until after the first game against Minnesota; by waiting to sign a vested veteran, Green Bay won’t be on the hook for an entire year’s salary if they decide later to cut that player.
